The 7 Deadly Sins of Flooring Specification

The 7 Deadly Sins of Flooring Specification

There are many factors to consider when it comes to flooring specification. That said, the process can be streamlined significantly by avoiding these seven deadly sins!

The Seven Deadly Sins of Flooring Specification:

1) Sloth: Lack of Research.

You cannot select the correct flooring solution for your project if you do not research both your substrate and the building’s environmental conditions and requirements thoroughly, leaving no stone unturned.

Not all substrates are created equal and there are many flooring solutions that simply will not work for your environment. Substrate issues are one of the main reasons for floor failure.

Do your research and ask questions to mitigate future issues!

2) Greed: It’s All About the Money.

While budget and cost play a crucial role in any building development, it should be one of the last factors considered when specifying a flooring solution.

Choosing a cheap and cheerful flooring product rather than a fit-for-purpose system can create costly headaches further down the line.

Focusing on frugality rather than your specific requirements can end up costing a company a lot more in the long term.

Focus on life-cycle costing rather than initial spend!

3) Lust: Just Because you Like it, Doesn’t Mean it Fits.

You may have seen the latest in flooring technology and decided that you need to utilise it in your next project. But just because it may be innovative or cool, it doesn’t mean that the performance and aesthetics will be a good fit for your current construction.

Don’t get seduced; make sure you specify a flooring system that is fit-for-purpose.

4) Pride: Listen to the Experts.

Every project is different, with some presenting more challenges than others. Ensure that you talk to flooring experts about your project needs. A reputable supplier will be able to provide vital knowledge, important insights and technical advice.

Don’t just specify a floor based on historical specifications, look at all your options.

5) Gluttony: Prioritise the Requirements.

Every building has a unique set of requirements. It is therefore imperative to prioritise these requirements as part of your flooring specification process.

Is the function or is the form of the building the top priority? Rather than adopting a more is more approach, prioritise your requirements and specify a tailored flooring solution.

6) Envy: Avoid Flooring Trends.

Be careful not to choose your flooring solution based on what is trendy or popular at the time. Flooring fads come and go, but a fit-for-purpose flooring solution should stand the test of time.

Make sure the flooring system you specify meets the building’s requirements not just what is currently on trend.

7) Wrath: Too Many Cooks Spoil The Broth.

Large-scale construction projects can have any number of architects, designers, engineers and consultants all working on various elements at any one time and flooring specification can concern all involved.

Each person has a role within the process and through planning, research and expert technical flooring advice, most specification issues can be overcome.
